With international travel off the agenda, Zurich Crickets again hosted a tournament at the new ground in Embrach during the school summer holidays. Teams from Basel Dragons and a mixed Gingins/GRYCC side joined the host’s 1st and 2nd XI sides.
Day 1 finished with BDJCC and ZCCC 1st XI unbeaten, qualifying both for the final. With the final pool matches on the morning of the day 2 irrelevant to the finals, the matches were shortened and teams took the opportunity to give their younger players more batting and bowling.
In the 3rd/4th play off, Gingins/GRYCC saw off the ZCCC 2nd XI who were unable to repeat the form of the morning. The final once again saw BDJCC and ZCCC 1sts – a repeat of every tournament in the season. Sadly the forecast thunderstorm rolled in early and play was abandoned after 19 overs of the first innings. In such a situation the title would normally be decided on the basis of the pool table, but with the deciding match being played as a dead rubber, the organisers felt it more appropriate to share the trophy and title between BDJCC and ZCCC 1sts.
With the COVID situation improving, we can hope that the 2021/22 season returns to normal, with indoor events as well as outdoors. However the U13s can be happy that the clubs managed to put on five outdoor tournaments in the season, providing plenty of cricket.
