Thus, the team from Barcelona won all their matches in Gründenmoos. "They came here to win," says organiser Nasir Mahmood. And: "They did that in convincing style." The defeated Olteners showed themselves to be fair losers, but at the same time were happy about the new competition. "In Switzerland, we always play against the same teams. This experience against foreign teams brings us and Swiss cricket forward."
Positive exchange with FC Winkeln
The organiser, Mahmood, was not only interested in organising a tournament of high sporting standard, he also wanted to bring the sport of cricket closer to the public. So the St.Gallen Cricket Club and FC Winkeln met for a brief exchange. Despite the intense heat and preparations for the important Cup match, the footballers of FC Winkeln did not miss the opportunity to try out some throws and shots. Understandably, however, they did not look quite as elegant as the participating teams. "We exchanged ideas among ourselves and hope that we might have the opportunity to benefit from each other in the future," said organiser Mahmood.
Stadtpräsidentin Pappa war zu Gast
The tournament balance was positive, even though the local St.Gallen Cricket Club came last in the group phase. This could also have been due to the fact that tournament organiser Mahmood was
also the St.Gallen team captain and many players helped to organise the event. "But that should not be an excuse," says Mahmood with a smile.
The organisers were particularly happy about the visit of city president Maria Pappa. "The fact that she came by and thus signalled her interest means a lot to us," says Mahmood. So the cricket community hopes to be able to expand the event in the future. One thing is certain: St.Gallen has cemented its reputation as a cricket city.
