David Barmes Memorial Trophy

Geneva Cricket Club

The official season opener, the David Barmes Memorial Trophy, has been postponed due to the Covid-19 corona virus pandemic.

Because of the Swiss Federal Council's Covid-19 corona virus pandemic restrictions and stipulations imposed by the local sports council, the 2021 David Barmes Memorial Trophy, traditionally the first game of the Swiss domestic season, has been postponed.

The competition was due to return to David Barmes' home ground in Geneva for the first time since 2013. On that occasion, the Swiss Representatives XI beat Geneva XI Stars by 190 runs.

This year, Geneva Cricket Club, last season's 40-over competition champions, has the honour of taking on a Swiss Representative XI consisting of representatives from clubs across Switzerland.

Chris Lodge stated, "Organising national tours is normally challenging and with the added uncertainty due to the pandemic and impact on travel around Europe, there is currently doubt regarding the proposed Swiss national senior men's tour to Warsaw. If this tournament is postponed or cancelled then the 5th or 6th of June are possible dates that the DBMT match could be rescheduled".

In 2019 the match was postponed because of rain and never found a new date, last year the match was also postponed without a new date because of the pandemic. It was last played in 2018!

Dr. David Barmes

The late Dr. David Barmes of Geneva C.C. was the first President of the National Association and served in that capacity for 10 years. In honour of his memory, Cricket Switzerland has continued a tradition that the winners of the league championship play a 40 over cricket match against the Swiss national team, marking the beginning of the season and for the prestige of winning the David Barmes Memorial Trophy.
