Competitions Chairman's report 2020

by Asvin Lakkaraju

2020 has been a challenging year for Cricket Switzerland and with a raging pandemic no-one believed we would have any cricket. New health and safety guidelines had to be brought in and Cricket Switzerland is proud to have managed to organize the number of games it did in such a short space of time. This required tremendous support and flexibility from all the clubs and right at the onset of this report I would like to thank all the people, clubs who made it possible to have cricket in 2020. In the current report, I will present you with the highlights of the season and a vision of where cricket in Switzerland is heading towards.

2020 will not only be remembered for the pandemic in Switzerland cricket circles but will also be remembered as an important year when we managed to cash in an unexpected opportunity and successfully combined forces with ECN and Dream 11 to organize a T10 cricket tournament at the picturesque Gründenmoos, which was watched live by millions of viewers and providing us a rare opportunity to show-case talent and quality we have. Over the course of the tournament, it has become clear that the excellence of cricket and the organization was top notch. Nomads CC won the first edition of the tournament defeating Olten CC in a thrilling final. All I can say is that T10 cricket is here to stay and Cricket Switzerland will now take on this format and the goal will be involving all the clubs in Switzerland.

Cricket Switzerland Premier League was reduced to a knockout competition because of the delayed start to the season. Teams displayed great spirit and competitiveness ensuring a good quality of cricket. The finals was played between St Gallen CC and Geneva CC at Gründenmoos resulting in a big victory to Geneva CC. Massive congratulations to Geneva CC who have competed the tournament with excellent spirit and were brilliant throughout, becoming well deserved Champions of Switzerland for 2020 season.

I would like to thank St Gallen CC for hosting the finals.

Pickwick Cup T20 tournament was played in a full format with East and West divisions taking part.
At the end of 53 competitive league games the four semi-finalists were Cossonay CC, Geneva CC, Olten CC and Winterthur CC. Geneva CC won the first semi-finals against Winterthur CC and Olten CC defeated Cossonay CC in a close game. The thrilling finals between Olten CC and Geneva CC resulted in a resilient Olten CC regaining the crown of T20 champions. Congratulations to Olten CC for once again becoming the Pickwick Cup T20 champions for 2020 season.

I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to Aargau CC for successfully organizing the finals
day at Wettingen.

Apart from these three main tournaments, Cricket Switzerland also supported the Swiss T10 tournament organized by St Gallen CC in August. The tournament was once again won by Olten CC who defeated Winterthur CC in the finals. Cricket Switzerland is glad to associate with and encourage all clubs to organize and participate in such tournaments there by providing more game time for their members and also generate more publicity for the game in the region.

There were several disciplinary issues reported this year. Player behaviour is extremely important aspect of cricket and we all need to take a step back and address this issue. Captains and Clubs will have to take more responsibility in addressing these issues. Serious incidents were reported in 2 games which led to the suspension of players. In other cases where the charges were of Level 1 in nature, the players and the clubs involved were reprimanded. All the players and the clubs involved have been reported on the CS website with the charges laid down by the league committee.

I would like to thank the league committee for tackling the issues efficiently.

sFOCUS and Umpiring. I would like to extent by gratitude to all the umpires who have tirelessly worked this season to make it a grand success. Without you all there would be no cricket. I would also like to thank sFOCUS for working hard in a shortened season to ensure that all games have umpires. As has been the case previous year, I like to highlight that we are severely short of umpires and I encourage all the clubs to get more involved in identifying and nurturing new umpires. We would like clubs to share any new ideas that might help us in recruiting and more importantly retaining the umpires.

Vision 2021

1. Time has come for cricket to take a next step in Switzerland. We will be having a record number of clubs participating in 2021 and the time has come to introduce a division system with top teams in premier division and the rest of the teams in Division 1 for the 40 over league competition. This will not only eliminate plenty of one sided games but will also enhance the quality of cricket but will provide participating teams a goal to aspire; staying in top division or being promoted to the top division.

2. The code of conduct will be implemented by the umpires and the disciplinary committee to deal with any indiscretions. The captains and clubs need to deal with player behavior with a more hands-on approach. Virtual meetings with captains and sFOCUS will become mandatory in 2021.

3. The T10 tournament organized by Cricket Switzerland will continue in 2021 and we plan to involve as many teams as possible to spread this format among all the clubs.
Cricket in 2020 would not have been possible without your support and support of every member of Cricket Switzerland executive who have worked extremely hard to make this season possible. I would especially like to thank Alex Mackay, Clive Denney, Chris Lodge, Abraham Koshy Amit Shukla, Ken McKeown for taking part in organization of various tournaments.

I look forward for your cooperation and suggestions for 2021 season.
