Senior cricket leagues 2020

Cricket Switzerland

With the prospect of a minimum of two new member cricket clubs in Switzerland in 2020, the Swiss cricket landscape continues to change. Cricket continues to grow and prosper, and this despite the ICC-managed process to create a thriving domestic association dragging into a third cricket season with no resolution in sight (but that is material for a different story). But this growth brings different challenges.

The growth in Swiss cricket is currently centred in the east of the country, causing a problem for the administrators of the Cricket Switzerland Premier League. If only two new clubs are granted permission to play in the competitive senior league, the number of games that would have to be played in the eastern division would not only vastly outweigh that of the number in the west, but clubs could not possibly schedule so many matches. A third new member could not be accommodated under current planning.

So in an effort to alleviate the potential ground allocation problem that a majority of clubs would face, and to retain some form of equilibrium across the country, Cricket Switzerland is considering forming a third division, a central division.

Graph 1: Possible make-up of three divisions in 2020

This isn’t the first time the 40 over competition has had three divisions. As recent as 2007 there were three divisions (Eastern A, Eastern B and West - involving 13 clubs). This time around however, there will be 18, potentially 19.
Another possibility would be the creation of a two-tier system, a national division A and two regional B divisions, with promotion at the end of the season for the top two clubs in the B division and relegation for the bottom two teams in the A division.

Graphic 2: A possible scenario for a National A Division and two Regional B Divisions (based on 2019 performances)

The current Cricket Switzerland President, Alexander Mackay, is known to be a great supporter of this second solution, as is the League Chairman, Asvin Lakkaraju. Both cite possibilities such as: making the National A League to a 50 over competition; concentrating experienced officials in the National A;  using the Regional B Leagues to: introduce new clubs; train up new officials; permit club 2nd teams.

Proposals for 2020 will be made at the AGM and the Council will agree a solution for this season, we are certain, to the satisfaction of all clubs involved, whoever they may be.
