Match 1 - Banstead CC vs. Swiss U15s

A magnificent ground and fine weather welcomed us at Banstead Cricket Club. The match was two innings of 18 overs. Swiss U15s won the toss and decided to field. Reuben and Jack Clark built a partnership of 28 before Jack was caught behind from Fin’s excellent swing. Reuben then could not resist Vadim’s flighted leg spin and was caught by Gurman. Ellis built a partnership of 24 with Jack Mill before he attempted a cover drive and caught by Luca from Vadim’s leg spin. Kai then surprised Banstead by his good line and length and took three wickets. Banstead struggled to build partnerships losing successive wickets at regular intervals – which included two wickets from Gurman’s quick bowling. Fin finished off the innings by taking Jacob’s wicket. Overall Swiss demonstrated excellent bowling and fielding in an unfamiliar environment. Luca and Jasper opened Swiss innings. Swiss found it hard to score in the green pitch. The pressure from dot balls tempted Jasper to take quick singles. He was run out.  Vadim was then caught trying to hook a bouncer from Jacob. Luca tried very hard to steady the ship but he was bowled by Jacob. This brought the captain Max. He built an impressive 97 run partnership with Gurman with a magnificent 69 not out. Gurman demonstrated an aggressive batting with his quick 31 runs. Banstead scored 131 for 9 against Swiss’ 123 for 4 – a deficit of 8 runs from the first innings.

In the second innings Banstead had a solid start with a first wicket partnership of 34 before Luca caught Jacob from Fin’s bowling. When Vadim ran out Ellis (39), Banstead’s resistance weakened – wicket started falling at regular intervals. First Marcos bamboozled Reuben. Sam was bowled by Saberish’s fast flighted top spin. Alex took a magnificent catch from Luca’s bowling. Jack and Luke tried to steady the ship with a valuable partnership of 17 before Jack was caught by Luca bowled by Vadim. When Vadim took Luke’s wicket, he was on a hat trick. When Jamie was run out by Gurman Banstead’s innings was soon ended. Swiss had to chase a target of 109 runs. Luca unfortunately was out lbw by William in the first over from an uneven bounce.  Saberish and Max built a valuable partnership of 36 before Saberish (11) was bowled by Jacob. Vadim was caught behind trying to hook to fine square leg. Gurman steadies the ship by building a partnership with Max (21). Max was eventually bowled by Jamie. When Gurman was out after scoring a quick 32 runs Swiss resistance was broken. Marcos was bowled by Ellis. Alex and Jasper’s defence was broken soon after. Fin was the last man standing. Swiss lost the match by 4 runs (considering the runs from 8 wicket-a-side). Again, Swiss performed well in the field and bowled well. They were up for a challenge of playing against Herts County U13s team the following day.

Match 2 - Herts CC U13s vs. Swiss U15s

Our next match was at the magnificent ground of Winchmore Hill CC against Herts County U13s team. We played two innings of 18 overs. Max won the toss again and decided to field. Archie and Lucas built a decent opening partnership (22).  Then Herts struggled to score due to some excellent bowling from Fin, Saberish, Alex and Luca. Harry used his physical advantage and aggressive LH batting to attack Vadim’s leg spin scoring 36 runs before falling prey to Jasper. A change in the batting order brought Fin and Alex into the crease as openers. They played carefully but the dot ball pressure took its toll when Alex lost his wicket.  Fin showed resistance but when he left Swiss were in trouble. That brought Max (28*) and Vadim (23) to the crease. They steadied the ship. Gurman (13*) joined Max and finished the innings. In the second innings Swiss demonstrated some strong bowling and fielding. The highlight was Fin’s 4 wicket haul. Luca and Saliesh added to the strength by taking wickets. Tom (18), Lucas (25) and Cameron (17) batted well. However, Herts lower order batsmen struggled to add to the total setting a target of 107 runs for Swiss. Gurman lost his wicket in the first over after scoring a magnificent 4 being caught by Archie on Henry’s bowling. Jasper (7) played sensibly and built a partnership 21 with Saberish. Saberish (42) demonstrated an excellent batting. A strong partnership between Saberish and Bhuvesh (50*) took Swiss over the line. An excellent win for the boys against Herts County U13s.

Match 3 - Twickenham CC U15s vs. Swiss U15s

After a day of rest on Saturday invigorated Swiss team arrived at the Twickenham CC ground. Forty odd little kids were enjoying their Sunday cricket. Excellent display of grassroots cricket. The weather goddess was again kind to us. A proper T20 was arranged. Swiss elected to bat first in the smaller boundaries. Vadim and Fin open the batting. Fin started well but unfortunately Vadim was run out in the first over. This brought Max to the crease. As usual he steadied the ship again with his magnificent 30 runs. Marcos (13), Marc (15), Jasper (13) and Greg (4) added valuable runs. Since we were short of players Max, Vadim and Jasper returned but it was too late to score any significant runs. Swiss set a target of 117 runs for Twickenham. They proved again that they are a strong bowling force. Fin took wickets of Thomas and Joshua in the first over with his excellent line and length. It seems the Hawkeye training at Lords was paying off. This brought George (29) and Cameron (46) to the crease who steadied the ship. Saberish clean bowled George with his signature fast flighted top spin and Cameron’s resistance was broken by Fin’s excellent swing and Max’s brilliant work behind the wickets. Olly was then run out by a direct hit from Vadim. Saberish clean bowled Dominic with his deceptive flight. Greg’s caught and bowled was icing on the cake. When Twickenham lost their 8th wicket they were 4 runs behind Swiss. However, they had plenty of overs left to go over the line and won the match by 2 wickets. The boys showed excellent team spirit over the Ascension weekend and are ready for a very solid performance in Leicester.
