My first umpiring experience

by Ryan Bosshard (aged 14)

Ryan Bosshard is one of Switzerland's youngest qualified umpires, having passed his sFOCUS Introduction to Umpiring in June 2019 with top marks. He umpired his first game at the Swiss Junior Cricket Festival in Zuoz less than a month later.

"In May this year I received an email from Zurich Cricket Club suggesting an umpiring course I could attend. I decided that as I wasn’t playing for the club that often and to go to the course and then umpire the Zurich u11 side.

The course took place on the 1st June 2019 in Winterthur and was led by Alex. The course was great and I learnt a lot. It  finished with a test which I passed.

I first umpired in Zuoz shortly after. At first, it felt a little odd not playing but I soon got used to it. I had trouble remembering to signal the byes and leg byes but luckily the batsmen were helpful and reminded me most of the time. I had to give a lot more LBWs than I had expected. I was able to umpire with really nice teams and people so the weekend was a really good experience for me. I hope that I will be able to umpire again soon".
