Basel indoors U15 report

Bäumlihof, Basel - 17 & 18 March 2018

Basel Dragins Junior Cricket Club

In a tense, hard fought final Basel Dragons held on to defeat a combined Zurich Cossonay and Gingins team to win their own U15 indoor tournament for the second year in a row.

The tournament was contested by six teams: Basel Dragons, Swiss U13s, Luxembourg, GRYCC, La Chat and the combined team with players from Zurich Crickets, Cossonay and Gingins.  The format was  a two group round robin on Saturday and semi-finals, play-offs and final on Sunday.  All matches were 20 overs per innings played at two locations in Basel, Baumlihof and Pfaffenholz, on both days.
Going into the final, both finalist teams had been undefeated through the group stages and had eased through the semi-finals by some margin.  Basel won the toss and elected to bat. Ismail and Aryan opened the bowling attack with fast and accurate bowling matched by some assured batting from openers James W and Max L. By the mid-way point of the innings both openers had retired with the score on 86 for 0.  The combined team fought back, regularly taking wickets meanwhile Max H pushed the scoring rate up retiring on 30 off just 12 balls. At the end of over 16 Basel were on 163 and the last pair at the wicket, Max L and Max H.  Despite the quality of the bowling, they took the score to 192 in the final over finishing on 47* and 46 respectively. The combined Zurich Cossonay Gingins team had scored 193, 263 and 238 in their previous three matches so the total was clearly in range for their powerful batsmen. The openers got off to a measured start scoring at close to the required rate.  Amogh quickly reached 30 to retire and by over 8 the score was 78 for 1. The Dragons were bowling well but with the strength in depth in the batting team another 115 off 12 overs looked comfortable.   Luke quickly reached his 30 and retired however the pressure was building and wickets started to fall.  At 139 for 4 after 15 overs, the required rate had climbed to 11. The big hitters, Amogh and Luke were still to come back in if needed. The match turned in the next over as Ojas was run out and Max L bowled the returning Amogh. This left the final pair of Antar and Luke still needed a further 46 in 4 overs. Eden held his nerve to clean bowl Luke with the third ball of his over and take victory by 42 runs.
The trophy was presented to winning captain James W who also won best batsman for 162 runs in the tournament.  Eden from Basel Dragons was awarded best bowler for his 8 wickets including a hat-trick in the game against GRYCC. Best fielder went to Nathaniel from GRYCC for an outstanding caught and bowled.
