Mr Pickwick Pub - The place where people meet

Zurich Lions Cricket Club (ZLCC) started their season with a easy victory over their opponents ZCCC in the opening match of Pickwick cup T-20 Competition, by a comfortable margin of 115 runs courtesy to their fantastic batting and then disciplined bowling and superb fielding.

On a good sunny day of Saturday 29th of April, what would be good contest to start, Zurich Crickets Cricket Club.

ZCCC won the toss and decided to bowl first. At first sight, it was a good toss to win because earlier in the week with continuous downpour meant the outfield will be slow and the pitch might assist the bowlers in the beginning due to moisture. Thus it seemed not to be a bad toss and ZCCC were quite happy to straight away call for bowling first. ZLCC was asked to bat and they had their task cut to see few over’s to get to know how the pitch might play.

Sumant alongside Pankaj went to open the innings. They both started cautiously as the first over was bowled was E Zazai and the batsmen picked out that pitch is not too bad for batting first. It was in second over when a crisp on drive from Pankaj went to boundary giving him confidence to go after loose balls. On the other hand Sumant too started playing nicely, respecting the good balls and dispatching the odd balls away. A nice hoick over the fine leg brought the first six of the match by Pankaj and then in the next over Sumant drove couple of beautiful cover drives for boundaries. What was a big slice soaring high up in the third man brought Pankaj his second six; and in no time ZLCC openers were motoring with 10 a over reading the scoreboard 43/0 in 4 overs. The damp outfield meant, the batsmen has to go for their runs by earning them. A nice cover drive in off side fetched them 3 runs , however that resulted a loss in concentration of Sumant who got out bowled to J Millar but scoring a good 21 (2 fours, 1 six) stitching a nice opening partnership of 57 in the 6th over. The next man in was Amol who hit some glorious sixes in the cow corner one of them was a reminiscent of the six little master use to hit fetching the good length bowl on to the back foot. Pankaj got out when scoreboard was reading 71/2 at the end of 8th over. Amol then shifted the gears and was looking threatening before he got out to a similar shot in deep mid wicket by J Millar who took a great catch after making 19 of 8 balls (3 sixes). The scorecard read 92/3 in 9.3 overs which meant ZLCC were going with a good run rate close to 10. In at 4 Sai joined meanwhile, and no. 5 Umar had bad call the very next balls when Umar got run out for nought by means of some superb fielding by ZCCC and halfway stage ZLCC was if not bad, was nicely poised at 94/3. One would predict the way ZLCC batsmen were playing 180-190 is well within reach as Sara joined Sai in no. 6. Sara hit a six on the off side so easily, so nonchalantly it sailed over the cover region in no time so eye pleasing to watch. Sai on the other end in no mood to spare the bad balls as he too joined the party. It was the partnership between both which shifted the gears and the ZCCC bowlers also helped by bowling as many as 6 no balls. Sara got out only after making a good 26 (2 fours, 1 six) and the scoreboard read 165 in 15.1 overs, bowled by Moaz Butt what was a good Yorker. The platform was set for ZLCC to launch the late on slaughter. Sai made his well deserved half century and the scoreboard was 165 by the end of 16th over. Remaining 4 overs were about to be seen whether ZLCC can cross 200 or not. Sriram got run out on a good direct hit the very next over trying to steal a run which was dangerous, he was out for 0. Ravi joined Sai as no. 8 and then the onus was on the duo to take ZLCC past 200. In 18th and 19th overs both ZLCC batsmen went for everything and made par the score 200. In the last over 15 runs were made eventually pounding the scorecard as 218/6 in their quota of 20 overs. This was some enthralling batting by ZLCC batters especially Sai in the late over who made a wonderful 77 not out only in 39 balls courtesy of 8 boundaries and 4 sixes. Ravi was not out as well for 10 (1 four). The platform was set as said for ZLCC batsmen, they came – they plundered and some breathtaking batting made the sublime total for ZLCC and their team enthusiasm was on peak. As their bowlers had a par score to defend, but as they say – make friends with opposition but don’t make enemies within. On the other hand it was a huge score to be chased down however ZCCC batsmen looked determined to see if they can chase the target.

In the contrasting second half, chasing a stiff target of 219, ZCCC batsmen were careful in their pursuit to such a massive score; although the ground got better after the first innings. Mohansamy started the bowling attack for ZCCC and with his accurate line and length ZCCC openers Nicholas Henderson and Tom Howe, were happy to see him off. The second opener bowler for ZLCC Imran initially was a little wayward but soon he too gathered his line and length and bowled a good nice second over. As both the bowlers were bowling in tandem, it was getting difficult for the openers of ZCCC to get going. And when the going gets tough, the tougher it seemed for the openers to score runs eventually adding up pressure on the batsmen when Tom Howe was bowled by Mohan in 3rd over putting up the pressure straight up in the beginning. The scorecard was reading 8/1 in 2.3 overs. Nick Henderson was out to Sara in lovely return catch and ZCCC were 24/2 at the end of 6 overs. It was a wonderful bowling coupled by some brilliant fielding and doubled pressure on the ZCCC batsmen they looked to gave up even the slimiest of the chances to even come closer to such humongous target. Boundaries were hard to come by and In the 7 over, Snehil came as a change bowler and bowled sharp in pacy in cutter to batsmen Moaz butt, the shout was for leg before but it had hit the batsmen in groin area and he was reeling in pain. The agony soon piled up in the pressure as in the next over Mohan got rid of another batsmen Mustafa a good take by Ravi. The score card was not moving for ZCCC as they were under pressure. It was reading 30/3 at the end of 7th over. The change bowlers Ravi and Snehil were too making it worse for ZCCC and runs were hard to come by. EZ Atyar eventually got out to good length ball by Snehil as Mohan took a wonderful catch in the mid off region. The batsmen at the  other end for ZCCC were running out of good partnership and runs were coming only in few boundaries here and there.Oliver joined Moaz and they tried to smash few out of the boundary but that was not gonna enough as run rate was almost climbed upto 15 RPO. Oliver hit couple of boundaries and a six and score card was 57/3 and the end of 12 over. Imran came next and Oliver hit his first ball what was looking to sail over mid off region but a stunning catch by Snehil, saw end of his innings and ZCCC hopes to even reach to respectable score was all but gone grim. The scorecard was reading 65/5. Moaz was lone fighter in the ZCCC team as he decided to go for anything which could save the pride for his team before getting out on a beautiful googly by Ravi before he made 28 on 34 balls consisting 4 boundaries. It was just a ritual to wrap up the match as the scorecard was 87/6 and the end of 16th overs and ZLCC were reaching to a thumping victory. The lower order batsmen Dayn and Noor Khan salvaged some pride for their team for putting team cross to 100 at the end of 19th over. Noor Khan was bowled by Mohan on 3 and Shaan was bowled by Umar in the 20th over who bowled the 20th over with such pace and fire. It was hard evening for ZCCC team as they got bundled for 103/8 in their quota of 20 overs and could not chase the target and handing a comfortable victory to ZLCC by 115 runs.
