Zurich Lions 178-7 (20.0 overs) bt Winterthur CC 158-3 (20.0 overs) by 20 runs
Sunday 18th June in their last match of Pickwick cup ZLCC won the toss and elected to bat first. WCC were to restrict ZLCC on par score to chase the target.
Batting first the ZLCC openers Amit and Pankaj opened the innings while Shijo and DP started the opening spell for WCC. Batting sensibly the duo were happy to see off shine of the new ball for first few overs where the score card read 9/0 after first 3 overs. Fourth over from DP went for 13 runs including 2 big sixes from Pankaj where ZLCC started getting back the momentum. In 5thover the change bowler Jagath went for 14 runs and runs were now started to coming good. Scorecard after powerplay of 6 overs read 43/0 which was a great start by ZLCC. Soon the 50 partnership came in 7th over and it was all coming nicely where the openers were playing sensibly; putting the bad balls away and respecting the good ones. After 11 overs ZLCC were 84/0 when Pankaj was bowled by Adam only before making a well-knit 45 (43 balls, 5 fours 2 sixes). First down Umar was sent obviously to up the ante and he did show his intentions by hitting second ball six, only before getting run out in bad mix up. Scorecard read 12 overs 87/2. Amit was going nicely before he too lost his concentration making a good hand of 36 (28 balls, 5 fours). ZLCC wasn’t really in a spot of bother as the scorecard read 14 overs 110/3, but it slowed down a bit after a pacy start. The onus was on to the duo of Sara and Ravi to make sure to get ZLCC close to 180-185 which was sort of par score on this ground which has fast outfield and shorter boundaries. And not to disappoint the started taking toll on WCC bowlers especially when 17th & 18th overs went for 19 and 13 runs each making the scorecard read 153/3 by end of 18th overs. Ravi and Srivatsan got out after making handy 12 (9 balls 2 fours) & 19 (8 balls, 2 sixes 1 four). Couple of run outs in last overs dented the scoreboard a little however Sara finished the innings in good note, after making a quick fire 39 (22 balls 3 fours, 3 sixes). Eventually ZLCC ended up with 178/7 which they thought was a 10-12 run short but all in all a good job by batsmen of ZLCC gave them good hope of curtailing the run chase by opponents. Adam took 2 wickets while Kasun and Rob one each for WCC, while 3 run outs (2 by Kasun).
Chasing a target of 179 in 20 overs, WCC had to begin their chase on a brisk note to fully utilize the powerplay to keep them in run chase hunt. Kasun and DP opened the innings for WCC while Sumant and Srivatsan started the bowling for ZLCC. The duo bowled good line and length and the openers were cautious not to give away any wickets. However in 3rd over DP got caught in point by Imran, for no run. It was a perfect start for ZLCC bowlers as they started drying up the runs with good compliment from their fielders. Ruan joined Kasun in the middle. Kasun played few good shots but a good leaping catch at mid-off by Sheshu on Srivatsan bowling , cutting short his innings before he made 13 (16 balls, 1 four) reading on the board was 15/2 by end of 4 overs. Ruan and Selva started building the innings together without taking too much risk, however a good bouncer from Umar in the 7thover forced selva to play which was easily taken by Sara reading the scoreboard as 52/3. Selva made 16 (14 balls 2 fours) but WCC started feeling the pressure as the run rate to chase was climbing up more than 10 an over. The middle over bowlers for ZLCC Sheshu and Snehil too were bowling in tandem not giving away easy runs making WCC batsmen to take required risk. Good tidy effort from ZLCC bowlers resulted in wicket of Praful (7 runs who got caught by Sara on Snehil’s bowling reading the board 67/4 at the end of 10th over. Now in the last quarter of match WCC needed 112 to win with run required 11 per over which was going to be challenging if not quite uphill task. Ruan on the other end was playing sensibly but free flow of runs were hard to come by. Tom joined Ruan and both of them stitched a partnership however afraid that wasn’t gonna be enough for WCC as when Tom got bowled on Sumant’s bowling, he made 14 (17 balls). Deesh got out in the same over courtesy good tight bowling by Sumant caught by Imran, he made only 2 runs. Last 5 overs WCC needed 60 odd to win before Ruan made 55 (47 balls, 4 fours 2 sixes) before getting caught by Lokesh on Sheshu’s bowling. WCC needed some heroic effort from someone to win the match, in 18thand 19th overs WCC got some big overs where Mayank played a nice little cameo of 25 runs (12 balls, 3 fours 2 sixes) but it was too little too late. Eventually with disciplined bowling and good fielding from ZLCC made the target out of reach as WCC fell short of 20 runs in their quest of chase. WCC ended up 158/9 in 20 overs. Sumant was pick of the bowlers for ZLCC as he finished with excellent spell of 4-0-13-3 and all the other bowlers were quite economical as well.
It was a great game of cricket, where both the teams played with great spirit of cricket , but ZLCC won by 20 runs, a good all-round performance by them in all the departments. WCC, if only they had got a brisk start could chase it up as it was too much to do in the end, however this concluded another exciting day of cricket in Pickwick T-20 cup tournament.
