Gingins U15 Indoor Tournament

Gingins Cricket Club

Over the course of the weekend of 25-26 November, Gingins Cricket Club once again hosted its annual indoor tournament at the College Madame De Staël in Carouge (GE). There were teams representing Basel, La Chat, Luxembourg, GRYCC, and Zurich/Gingins/Cossonay - totalling 45 players.

With a scoring system that encouraged accurate bowling, tight fielding and sharp running between the wickets, the overall standard was exceptionally high across the 10 matches played in a tight schedule and played in an excellent, competitive spirit.
The format of the tournament was a 5-team 20/20 round-robin, giving each team an opportunity to play one another, with the victorious team being the one taking the most points.  There were five matches on the Saturday and again five matches on the Sunday.  Many of the matches were closely contested, and the result could have gone either way.

Final standings

The final standing after the pool was:

Pos Team Played Won Lost Pts
1. Basel Dragins U15s 4 4 0 24
2. Zurich/Ginguns/Cossonay U15s 4 3 1 19
3. GRYCC 4 2 2 14
4. Luxembourg 4 1 3 9
5. La Chat 4 0 4 4

The match that ultimately decided the trophy was between Basel and the Zurich/Gingins/Cossonay team, with Basel limiting Z/G/C to 164 runs off 20 overs, taking wickets at regular intervals. They then chased down the target of 165 with two overs to spare and 3 wickets in hand.

Individual awards

The individuals singled out for making the most impact for their teams over the course of the weekend were:

Best Batsman James W  (BDJCC)

Westy won the Best Batsman award after scoring 123 runs in 4 innings without losing his wicket over the weekend.  I do not recall Westy ever really giving any fielding side a sniff at his wicket, he was very composed throughout the weekend.

Other notable batting efforts: Ismail Z (Zurich/Gingins/Cossonay) with 104 runs; Nathaniel G (GRYCC) 93 runs; and Pranav H (Luxembourg) and Ricky B (Zurich/Gingins/Cossonay) each with 91 runs.

Best Fielder

Srishyam S

Shyam won the Best Fielder award this year for some excellent work behind the stumps for GRYCC.  He was credited with 8 fielding dismissals.  He had many challengers for this title, the fielding this weekend was of the highest quality, with lots of good backing up to prevent the overthrows.  There were also amazing catches off the ceiling and walls as well as sharp bowler reactions to return catches.  Also quite a number of runouts, some from ill-judged attempts at singles and mix-ups in the middle, but many from excellent throws at the stumps under pressure.

Other notable performances in the field were Omair H (BDJCC) with 6 dismissals and Aryan L (ZCCC) with 5.
(Please note: there were some fielders not recorded for taking a catch or effecting the run-out – a thing for the scorers to look at in the future)

Best Bowler Vadim B  (GRYCC)

Vadim won the Best Bowler award for taking 8 wickets in four innings for GRYCC, including 4 in one match, and 1 wicket while playing in a match for Z/G/C as a borrowed player.

Other notable performances came from Jimmy A and James W (both of BDJCC) took 7 and 6 wickets, respectively.  The next highest amount of wickets taken was 3, and there were several bowlers on this number.

Spirit of Cricket

Thomas H

At Gingins Cricket Club, the Spirit of Cricket Award is a flexible award.  It can be awarded to the player of the tournament, or it can be awarded to a player who has put in a lot of effort and plays the game in a manner from which others can take inspiration.

This year the award goes to Tom for the latter, he started playing cricket only about 6 months ago (after Easter in 2017).  As anyone who has tried to play the game can attest, it is not an easy to come to grips with - there are a lot of technical aspects to the sport one must learn.  In life, we all face challenges and need to learn new skills. Tom, playing in his first indoor tournament, took three wickets, and saved a number of runs in the field.  For his efforts with the ball and in the field at the beginning of his cricketing journey, we are awarding him with the Spirit of Cricket.

Well done to the Basel Dragons JCC for winning this year’s event, and to all the individual winners as well.
