Freiburg Nomads Cricket Club beat St Gallen Cricket Club on the last ball of the innings to win by 5 wickets at Gründenmoos on Sunday 26th June 2016.
Thunderstorms the previous evening were still apparent on the wet & soft outfield that is also used for rugby, under the shadow of the AFG Arena in St Gallen, and with further forecasts of rain likely to result in a reduced overs game, Freiburg Nomads won the toss and elected to field.
After a delayed start while the officials measured the distance between the stumps using the latest laser technology, Freiburg Nomads opening bowlers failed to get to grips with a pitch they had
only previously played a friendly on, allowing St Gallen a good start in difficult conditions. But good catches in the 4th, 5th, 8th & 16th overs, enabled Freiburg to limit St Gallen to a
moderate 90-4 at the 20 over drinks break.
It wasn't until the 26th over that the Freiburg captain Vijay bowled Waqar (19) and got the long awaited and necessary breakthrough to end the 5th wicket partnership of 60 runs. In the next over Krishnan dismissed the St Gallen captain Nasir (86), effectively marking the beginning of the end as the St Gallen tail-end lacked in ability & fire-power.
St Gallen wickets fell at regular intervals and without adding any substantial amount to the score,
Krishnan missing out on a hattrick in the 30th over as the St Gallen temporarily stuck on 156 and eventually being bowled out for 162, 7 overs short of their allotted 40.
In stark contrast to St Gallen, the guests from Freiburg im Breisgau started very slowly. At 8 runs off 8 overs the run-rate increased from 4 an over to nearly 5. But St Gallen were unable to
break the Freiburg Nomads opening partnership and the total rose with their confidence, at the 20 over drinks breaks they were exactly halfway to the total on the halfway mark (82-0 off 20
Drinks appeared to disrupt Freiburg's concentration and immediately after the 'keeper spilled an easy catch the opening partnership was broken anyway.
The promised thunderstorm didn't materialise, but neither did wickets, not often enough anyway, allowing Freiburg Nomads to come back again at the score, confident in the fact that with wickets
in hand they would have their full complement of 40 overs to attain the runs in.
Despite the fact that Freiburg Nomads were finding runs very hard to come by, as the pressure rose so did St Gallen's discipline in the field, misfielding and extras helping Freiburg's cause.
In the last over Freiburg Nomads required seven to win, singles were not enough. But a wide and bye brought the game into their reach and with one ball to go and the scores tied, Freiburg ran blindly on the last ball, St Gallen missing out on the run-out and handing Freiburg a hard-fought win by a very flattering 5 wickets.
