CERN CC 233ao (39 overs) defeated GICC 159ao (31.3 overs) by 74 runs
Prevessin, Sunday 26th July 2015
After beating Geneva International CC in their final CSPL game of the qualification round, CERN CC remain unbeaten and in doing so win the CSPL Western Division to earn them the right to
host the semi finals against the runners up of Eastern Division.
On a cloudy and slightly breezy afternoon CERN CC played its last scheduled league match against GICC at their home ground in Prevessin before the semi-finals. This match was crucial to both teams as CERN wanted to continue their unbeaten winning run to ensure home advantage for the semifinal and GICC wanted to win after their first defeat in the league. CERN captain, Imtiaz Ahmed, lost the toss and GICC elected to field first. The start of the CERN innings was ordinary as Tanvir was caught in the 4 th over, having already been dropped once. After that, Onions and Percival played very responsibly and gave the innings a good foundation, the second wicket only falling in the 24th over with the score at 115. Onions made a timely 32 and Percival made 85 before getting bowled by a quick delivery by GICC paceman Thomas. In the middle order, Crook’s quick 22 helped to set a total of 233 all out. For GICC, Ubaid, Thomas and Habib took 3 wickets each.
When GICC started their innings, their first wicket fell very quickly, I. Ahmed trapping the batsman lbw on his second delivery. I. Ahmed took 3 wickets in total. CERN’s fast bowling attack dominated GICC from the other end, particularly D. Ahmed who took 4 wickets. Other highlight of CERN’s bowling performance was a quick and furious spell from Elmer Sharp and Paul’s 2 wickets with the first two balls of his spell. Tanvir took the last wicket to end a dogged partnership and GICC were bowled out for 159, CERN thus winning by 74 runs.
Many thanks are due to Zoe Crook for scoring impeccably as usual.
