The Basel Dragons Junior Cricket Club conducted the Swiss U15 cricket tournament at Pfaffenholz on April 5th and 6th.
The event was a great success with 6 teams attending from all over Switzerland and Luxembourg, Basel Dragons U15s beating Luxembourg U15 in final to win the tournament.
In Group A, Cossonay played Gingins, and batting first Cossonay set a target of 130 for Gingins with Dan 26* and Thomas 24*. In response Gingins were all out for 101, with Greg and Daniel taking 2/5 and 2/11 from 2 overs.
In the next game, Gingins lost to Luxembourg in a tense game which went to the last ball. Luxembourg batted first and scored 122 with the help of openers Markus 25*, Robert 21 and William scoring
19. Gingins almost chased the target with the help of Thomas 23, Max 25* and John 23. It came to 10 runs of the last over with the miserly Markus to bowl (6/0 from 2 overs then). The game went to
the last ball with 1 needed to tie and 2 to win and Markus held his nerve and bowled a beauty to get rid of Pranav and Gingins heart broken.
The final game of the Group A saw Luxembourg and Cossonay play. Luxembourg scored 134/2 batting first with Markus 21 and Robert 26* and Luca scoring 18. In response, Cossonay were all out for 109 with Arnav top scoring with 30* and Ruan 17. Oscar from Luxembourg took 2/17 of 3 overs.
The Group A fixtures finished with Luxembourg on top followed by Cossonay and Gingins.
In Group B, the opening game was between the hosts, Basel Dragons and Zurich, which the Basel won convincingly by 36 runs. Basel batted first and with contributions of Mustafa 27*, Sid 19 and
Thomas B – 15, Basel ran up a total of 150/5 and defended it well with a disciplined effort on field including 3 run outs. This was followed by Zurich playing La Chat and Zurich won by 30 runs.
Zurich scored 147/7 with the help of Ruan 32*, Ollie 25* and Nick 18. La Chat were all out for 117 with Iain top scoring with 18 runs and useful contributions from Seb (13) and Freddie(10).
On Sunday morning, Basel played La Chat and batting first scored 135/4 with Ed Clayton top scoring 27*, Mustafa 20 and Tom Russel 16. Basel defended this score by bundling out La Chat for 127 with disciplined fielding including 4 run outs. Basel finished at the top of Group B with Zurich second and La Chat 3rd.
Gingins played La Chat for the 5th place and Gingins scored 120 batting first with Rohan 30, John 27* and Leo 22*. In response La Chat were all out for 82 with 5 run outs.
In the semis, Luxembourg played Zurich and Zurich batting first set a target of 114 with their openers Nick and Ruan scoring 26* and 25 * respectively with Sohel scoring 15. In their reply, Luxembourg lost their way and at the end of 11 overs were 69/5 and were out of the game and tournament. Some sensible batting under great pressure by Christopher (17*) and Oscar (15*), they won the match through sheer determination.
In the second semi, Basel playing Cossonay batted first and produced the best batting performance of the tournament scoring 162. Led by their openers Tom Russell 29*, Mustafa 28* and with a great follow up from the rest of the batsmen Callum 22 and cameos from Tom Patrick 17, Sid 17 ran up 162 runs. Cossonay started off well with Arnav retiring for 25 and Greg scoring 22 and were in the game till 7 overs with 74 for 2. As it happens chasing such big scores, a clutch of wickets through run outs between 8th and 11th overs, they lost their way and were all out for 106.
We were setup for a nice finals with the toppers of Group A and Group B facing off.
Basel won the toss and put Luxembourg to bat first, restricteding them to 115. Markus scored 25* and was supported by Lachlan 18 and Robert 17. Basel started shakily losing their captain in the first over at a score of 5. Mustafa (26*) and Callum (25*) batted sensibly to give a good foundation and was followed up by some brilliant hitting from Tom Patrick (27*) and Sid 19*.
In the end Basel won convincingly with by 6 wickets and won their first championship for the year.
Mustafa was adjudged the best batsman of the tournament for his consistency in all outings. Markus from Luxembourg was the best bowler of the tournament for his disciplined bowling across games (11-1-44-3). Iain from La Chat was the best fielder of the tournament with 3 great catches.
The tournament was a great success with all teams participating and playing in right spirit. The new rules implemented developed and tested the skills of our young cricketers.
