BDJCC 158-6 in 25 overs beat Gingins 24-10 & 69-8 in 25 overs by 65 runs
Steve West reports of the final U11 outdoor game of season between Basel Dragons Junior CC versus Gingins CC on a bright and sunny day at Rankhof in Basel on Sunday 19th October.
The Dragons had most of their older more experienced players available so were fielding a strong team against a mostly young Gingins team with a couple of more experienced player to balance things out.
Captain James West won the toss and elected to bat. Despite an excellent open spell from Wilf, Ethan & Fergus got off to a flying start taking the score to 39 at the end of over 5 when Fergus
retired on 17 and Ethan on 7. Max L & Tom batted sensibly then with very good running between the wickets taking the score to 65 in over 10 when Max was out for 10 hitting his wicket as
clubbed a short ball to the boundary. The scoreboard kept ticking over as Tom retired on 12 and Max H was caught behind for 5. James & James then pushed the scoring on; Westy retiring on 20 off 14 balls and James A retiring on 9. Archer, who had been keeping wicket, came on to bowl and with an excellent spell of quick bowing dismissed Shreyas for 4 and George without scoring. Soumil fell to Wilf and the innings was wobbling at 139 in over 23.
Ethan came back in and with Ray scored quickly until Ethan was out with 2 balls left for 18. Max L came back in to see out the over, Ray was 8 not out and the total a very respectable 158.
Gingins reply started very well with Gregor hitting three 4's off Tom's first over. James A then bowled Gregor with his second ball and had Nikhilesh caught and bowled 2 balls later. In his next over James A bowled Charlie and then James was in the action again catching a simple chance off Ricky and then a fantastic one handed catch to dismiss Giani both off Ethan. When Max H stumped Oliver off Soumil in the sixth over, Gingins were in deep trouble at 23 for 6. Then Ethan came on for his second over and had Hamish out to a difficult catch taken behind the stumps by Max H. The other Max joined in to run out Ari to a direct hit from square leg with just one stump to aim at! Danger man Archer then came to the wicket but a perfect full length ball from Ethan clipped the top of his middle stump and Gingins were 24 for 9. Any hope of Alex saving the day disappeared with Westy's first ball as he chipped a catch to James A who took his fourth catch of the day. So in 37 balls the Dragons had conceded 11 runs and taken 10 wickets.
The rules allowed all the batsmen to come back in and the Gingins team fared better second time around, Archer batting very aggressively to hit 5 fours in his 22 and Wilf taking his score to
and at the end of 25 overs Gingins reached 93.
The Dragons bowled and fielded very well conceding only 8 wides and 3 no balls and more tidy work from Max behind the stumps saw just 2 byes. Ethan was top wicket taker with 4, James A, James W, Soumil & Ray each took 3 and Shreyas taking 1.
Apart from all those catches for James A, Max L took a terrific diving catch at short mid-wicket and Tom held his nerve to take a skyer at square leg.
