U9 Basel Dragons tournament report

by Pete Veal & Steve West

Firstly thanks to everyone involved with the preparation, running and supporting of the recent extremely successful U9 tournament in Basel. Thanks in particular to Chris Clayton for the overall organization and trophies, Brijesh Luthra and his great team for two well contested, good, close games. Thanks also to John Barton, the Luzern boys and Charlie from Gingins for helping make a great tournament, playing with great spirit (and Charlie in every game...!) and which hopefully gives
you all the desire to take your cricket to the next level....

Basel opened the tournament with what turned out to be a precursor for the final against Zurich Crickets. James West lost the toss and we were put into bat. The opening pair of James and Ethan got us off to a cracking start putting on over 30 runs with no wickets down. The second pair of Ollie and Thomas made steady progress despite being out twice. The third pair of Marc and George accelerated well with Marc top scoring on 13 not out. The final pair of Francis and in particular Soumil kept the score board ticking to post a total of 109-3 (nett 94). What was particular
impressive and pleasing for us was positive running between the wickets which together with good calling resulted in no run outs - a life time away from our first game in Zurich last winter. Aryan, Luca and Charlie (guest from Gingins) bowled particularly well.
In reply Zurich scored well with Sam and Aryan top scoring but lost wickets steadily throughout with Ollie taking 2 wickets. This resulted in a total of 110-6 (nett 80), and handing victory to the Dragons by 14 runs. Special mention to George Lightowler who kept wicket at the last minute and showed great agility behind the stumps, preventing a large number of byes.

U9 medals and awards
El Presidente did a great job with the medals....Dont eat it Marc!

The middle part of the day saw the Luzern Wanderers playing first Zurich and then Basel. The Luzern side was made up of 5 lads form Luzern, Charlie from Gingins and Souresh and Francis from Basel. Despite losing both games the Wanderers played with great enthusiasm and spirit. Special mention goes to Turi and Michael who scored the most runs for Luzern and our own Souresh who hit the only Wanderers 4.

Second game they batted first and we got them out 9x! We struggled more and lost 7 wickets with a couple of run outs, but got safely home with all pairs contributing. Marc starred with the bat - 13 and 11 not out in the two game v Zurich and James with the ball, but overall a great team effort and really showed how much they have progressed! We can summarize by great progress of our team.

U9 BDJCC first trophy
Basel Dragons U9's with their first trophy-! Hopefully many more

The final was a different game, this time Basel winning the toss and putting Zurich into bat. This time they made a good start, putting on 36 quick runs before losing a wicket. They then lost steady wickets throughout, finishing on 110-9 (nett 65). This included 5 run outs and a devastating spell of bowling form James West of 3-3-7.
Ollie and Aryan top scored for Zurich and Aryan deserves a special mention after having to retire hurt but returning to bat out the final over. In reply, contrary to the first innings, the opening pair of James and Ethan got off to a shaky start losing three wickets, but managing to recover from a negative start to post a reasonable score. Ollie and Thomas in particular accelerated the scoring with Thomas top scoring on 14 not out. Then some tight Zurich bowling especially from Luca and Aryan with Tom taking 2 late wickets, made us work hard, but Marc and George and finally Francis and Soumil saw us home, finishing on 110-7 (Net 75).

Overall it was an exhausting yet exhilarating day for both the kids and the coaches! This time we deservedly ended up as the champs but we know Zurich will have something to say about that next time!

U11 Basel Dragons tournament report

The Basel Dragons and Luxembourg kicked off the U11 tournament with the Dragons looking for revenge from their semi-final defeat in November at the Swiss Indoors.

Luxembourg batted first and posted 59 for Basel to chase. Some tight bowling by Ben Harper and Callum Wright coupled with 2 run outs meant Luxembourg never really found their stride and in the end did well to use all their overs. Basel started well with Will Clayton striking the first four of the tournament but they got bogged down in the middle of the innings with some rather tentative shot selection.  Luxembourg bowled a very tight line conceding only 17 extras in the innings. The final equation was 5 off the last over to win and Basel scraped home with a ball to spare.  Ishan batted well to see his side home and ended up with 13 hard fought runs. Peter was the pick of the Luxembourg bowlers and coupled with his 10 not out had a fine game.

Next up was Zurich against Gingins. Luca Poynton opened the batting for Gingins and proceeded to smash 3 sixes before being retired for a fine innings of 24.  Ben Harris and Chris Langford picked up two wickets a piece for very few runs leaving Zurich to chase 66 for victory.  An opening maiden from Luca boded well but unfortunately for Gingins this proved to be the only highlight and Zurich knocked off the runs for the loss of only one wicket. Chris ended on 18 not out completing an excellent all-round performance.

Gingins stayed on the field to face Luxembourg who were also looking for payback from November, where they lost out in the final to a fine team performance from Gingins. Luxembourg posted a very respectable 77 with Brice top scoring on 20. James West bowled a very tidy spell of 2 for 6 but 77 proved too much for Gingins, who were bowled out for 38, Nicholas providing the only real resistance with a knock of 7 not out.

Basel Dragons returned to the fray against Zurich but could only post a very modest total of 44, with only 21 runs coming from the bat. Nerves and some suicidal running between the wickets were to blame and Coach James was once again left scratching his head. Zurich knocked off the runs with relative ease in 10 overs.

Basel needed to win against Gingins to make the final and they made a great start by running out Luca Poynton in the very first over. Gingins never really recovered but with Basel giving some expensive extras away late in the innings a respectable total of 49 was posted.  Callum and Ben were again the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets each for very few runs.  Tanmay opened the innings and took his opportunity well by batting through and scoring 13. Will came in at 3 and struck a mighty six before being bowled going for glory.  Basel lost only 1 wicket in the chase setting up a Final against the winners of the Luxembourg Zurich match.

Luxembourg, looking to build on their win against Gingins, got off to a terrible start losing their star batsman Brice for 0 in the first over. Some testing bowling from Tom Bews and in particular Chris Langford (3 for 4) kept the total to a very reachable 51. Chris opened the batting for Zurich and once again stood out, carrying his bat in a fine innings of 14. Zurich reached the total for the loss of only the 1 wicket.

Luxembourg faced Gingins in the 3rd place play off and unfortunately for Gingins once again proved too strong. Their formidable total of 109 for 4 was the highest of the tournament with Brice, Scott, Alex and Surya all scoring in double figures. James was again the call-out bowler for Gingins conceding only 5 runs in 2 overs.

The stage was set for the final, Basel hoping that the bigger arena would play to their strengths. Basel were put into bat but once again run outs were their downfall with Ben and Will both out cheaply. Callum, finally playing to his potential, held the innings together with an excellent batting display and was eventually retired for 23. Daniel Hope also batted well in a cameo role contributing 13 in a total of 73 that one felt was perhaps 10 runs short of really testing the opposition.  Ben Harris and Ollie batted well but too many extras conceded meant Basel was always chasing the game. Will Clayton came into some late form with the ball picking up 2 for 11 but Zurich proved too strong again and won the game with an over to spare.

Zurich were deserved winners in a tournament that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.  Brice (44 runs) picked up the Batsman of the Tournament Award and Chris Langford (6 for 35) the Bowler of the Tournament.

Much thanks to Chris Clayton and the Organizing Committee for a job well done and one hopes this is the start of a longstanding Spring fixture in the diary.

U13 Basel Dragons tournament report

No April Fools here as our Basel Dragons U13 team took to the indoor field for the Basel Tournament at Pfaffenholz Sports Hall. This was the first competitive match for many of our team and it proved to be a very intense, hard fought series of 4 matches during the day. First up was a hard lesson, being comprehensively beaten by a strong, on form, Zurich team. Our bowling/fielding gave away too many runs then the batting was exposed by the Zurich Crickets’ quicks. However, Basel showed a great attitude & determination in bouncing back with a vastly improved performance in all 3 departments to beat Gingins by 5 wickets in the next game. The final two games against Luxembourg and Cossonay/Basel were nail biters that went down to the wire, Basel Dragons narrowly lost both. As coaches, Pete and I were really impressed by the disappointment felt by all the team – this really meant something to them!

Some individual highlights: Will Bayliss for captaincy, accurate bowling and showing true ‘Aussie Grit’ while batting at the top of the order. Tom Russell for captaincy, tight, aggressive bowling and together with Will providing some the best running between wickets we and the other coaches had seen, getting us off to some flying starts. Tom Patrick for his batting, wickets and a spectacular one-handed catch in the covers. Jake Galbraith kept consistently well taking a couple of great catches behind the stumps and slapped two 6s back over the bowlers head when batting. Cameron Sawyer for his strong all-rounder performance and wickets. Alex Snow for his bowling and a brave catch at mid-wicket off a strong pull shot. James Snow for his committed fielding and wickets as a bowler and Thomas Grantham for a great caught & bowled off one of his spells.

Overall a very promising tournament, team showing great commitment and unlucky not to finish higher than 4th. At the awards, Tom Russell won the overall U13 best batsman trophy for the competition, having scored most runs over the 4 games. This team has the potential to improve!
