The Basel Dragons Cricket Club, applies to become SCA affiliate member

The newly formed junior cricket club, the Basel Dragons Cricket Club, has formally applied for affiliate membership of the Swiss Cricket Association.

All the necessary documentation has been received and will be presented to the Council and subsequently to the next Annual General Meeting in early 2012.

Founded on Friday 6th May, Basel Dragons Junior Cricket was created “in the best interests of the junior players”. The committee, headed by their President Mr. Chris Clayton, and coaches are dedicated to expanding the club so that more juniors from the Basel area can be introduced to the game of cricket in an enjoyable and competitive atmosphere.

The club aims to put out sides at the U11, U13 and U15 level on a consistent basis and indeed has already done so at U11 and U13 levels. Not only did the Dragons participate competitively at the Junior Zuoz Festival in May, but several of their players also already represented Switzerland at Under 15 level when they joined the recent successful tours to Cambridgeshire and Denmark. In addition, Basel Dragon players were included in the national U11 and U13 teams that travelled to Vienna in mid-June. Clayton added that increasing numbers at all age groups will be a focus of our activities in the first year.

The SCA welcomes the application. It demonstrates once more the success of the junior development programme in Switzerland, not just in the results we are achieving at all age groups at international tournaments, but also in the numbers and spread of the game throughout the country. Schools and parents see the advantages of being members of clubs belonging to a proper functioning association that is making every effort to provide well-organised cricket camps, coaching courses, inter-club matches, national indoor and outdoor tournaments, and competitive national teams at all levels. And there is no doubt that other junior clubs will follow the recent lead taken by Basel Dragons CC.
