U15 East v West of Switzerland match at ZIS Adliswil

In the third Under 15 event at ZIS in Adliswil, a West of Switzerland vs East of Switzerland match was played on Sunday 12th February 2012 (11-4pm).

Despite the fact that the holidays have already begun and a number of players are away skiing, nineteen players took part. The coaches decided on a 40-over match format, batsmen would retire on 50, while bowlers were limited to 6 overs each but a minimum of 3.

Special attention was paid to fielding placements to challenge the players. With eight players allowed to field at any one time, good use was made of slip fielders and some players excelled in close positions. Vincent Jacard displayed great reflexes at short mid-off, while Marishque Puvimanasinghe was unlucky not to take a couple of catches at first slip. Fielding throughout was kept tight, and keepers on both sides, Henry Mackie and Daniel Abbasi in particular, did well and their endurance levels were tested to the full. Many thanks to fielding coach John Millar for all his input.

Winning the toss, the West of Switzerland elected to field. The East of Switzerland began steadily after the early loss of a wicket, stepping up the run rate considerably in the final twenty overs, and finishing on 291 for 8. In fact both teams batted through their forty overs without losing all their wickets – an excellent achievement. Batsmen built innings and partnerships, with Ashwin Vinod and Moaz Butt hitting 50s and several others getting results over 20.

It was particularly encouraging to see Under 13 players Greg Foster, Freddie Walker, Floris Winckel, Anthony Palmiero and Nicolas Henderson stepping up a level and putting runs on the board for their teams, while Arnav Sandu must be congratulated on his resilience against a particularly aggressive and fine spell of bowling. This bodes well for the Under 15 team next year. As expected, national players Marishque Puvimanasinghe, Neil Creba-Wright, Simon Henderson, Aiden Andrews and Ruwan Jayakody batted well and are all improving steadily.

The West of Switzerland’s run chase was never easy and some tight bowling put the West under considerable pressure. However, the batsmen stuck to the job, showed patience and the runs began to flow. After 40 overs, the West were 265 for 7, just falling short by 26 runs.

The match was high scoring – to some extent due to the number of extras (West 97, East 105). Wayward bowling was punished mercilessly, and anything down the leg side outside the batsman’s stance was called a wide. Nevertheless, there were a number of bowlers who returned good figures on both sides. For the West of Switzerland Ashwin Vinod returned excellent figures with an economy rate of 4.8, as did Floris Winckel with 5.75. Vincent Jacard is improving fast and deserved his economy rate of 6.6. The pick of the East included Simon Henderson with a mere 11 runs hit off his six overs (1.83), Anthony Palmiero with a fine 5.16, Moaz Butt with 6.16 and Ruwan Jayakody and Neil Creba-Wright with the same figure of 6.33.

Congratulations to all who played and many thanks as always to parents who make such matches possible by driving long distances. We are also extremely grateful to Janet Palmiero and Philippa Mackie, who do such a wonderful job with the scorebook. Finally, we are once again indebted to ZIS Adliswil for their generosity in allowing us to use their superb facilities.
